Discover how trace elements like iron, manganese, and copper create the vivid colors in petrified wood. This guide explains the chemical substitution process, the difference between hematite and goethite, and how to identify mineral pigments in fossils.

Discover the exact mineral composition of petrified wood, from the dominant silicon dioxide (SiO2) to the rare trace elements that create vibrant reds, purples, and blues. This pillar guide explores the chemical transition from organic cellulose to gemstone, covering early and late diagenesis, quartz varieties like jasper and chalcedony, and how to identify mineral purity in the field. Learn the difference between silica and calcite replacement and how burial temperature and pH levels affect fossil preservation. Perfect for collectors and geology enthusiasts wanting to understand the science of permineralization.

Learn how cellular preservation organic matter occurs through mineral replacement and anaerobic conditions. This hub guide explains the chemistry of the molecular cast, the role of volcanic ash, and the difference between silicification and calcification in fossils.

Learn the critical differences between calcification vs silicification fossils. This guide explains why silicification preserves cellular detail at a 10-micrometer scale while calcification creates protective carbonate nodules. Discover how to use the acid test and Mohs hardness scale to identify your specimens and why silica is the gold standard for fossil longevity.

Discover the precise geological triggers required for perfect cellular fossilization. This guide explains why anoxia, rapid burial, and silica saturation (above 100 ppm) are the three pillars of biological preservation, and how volcanic ash creates the “mineral scaffold” necessary to freeze cell walls in time before decay occurs.

Discover how microscopic analysis of petrified cells distinguishes between mineral casts and true biological preservation. Learn about thin-section microscopy, SEM resolution, and the role of silica precipitation in preserving cell wall pitting and xylem vessels.

Organic matter decay in diagenesis determines if a specimen becomes a high-quality fossil or a featureless rock. This article explains the “mineral race” where silica precipitation must outpace anaerobic bacterial decomposition to preserve cellular anatomy. Learn about the role of lignin, pH levels, and the specific preservation windows required for museum-grade petrification, featuring data from the Geological Society of America and field observations from volcanic ash deposits.

Learn the critical chemical difference between permineralization vs replacement process in fossilization. This guide explains how permineralization preserves cellular detail by filling voids, while replacement swaps organic atoms for minerals, impacting the scientific value and appearance of petrified wood.

Discover how cellular structure is preserved in fossils through the precise chemical interplay of permineralization and rapid anoxia. This guide explains why lignin acts as a molecular scaffold and how volcanic ash provides the soluble silica necessary to freeze biological cells in stone before they collapse under sedimentary pressure. Learn the difference between permineralization and replacement, and why mineral grain size is the deciding factor in museum-grade cellular fidelity.
